Our email addresses
Our email addresses are required for this site. Who else sees them? Just verifying that the creeps out there can't come here to lie, still and cheat.

Hi Mz Fish,
Only admins of this site can see the email addy you registered with. It is not made public.
Tara's posts on 800notes are bad enough - we don't want to start getting emails from her

I further recommend that you do not fill out any info on your profile either!

Re: Our email addresses
Another option ... particularly if one needs an email address to visit a site that may be ... questionable:
Get another email address ... from one of the free email addy providers ... and use that addy as an alternate address, wherein one knows the content may be spam.

Re: Our email addresses
Everyone is correct. I would use an alternative or throwaway email address for any kind of site like this. There is no danger of anyone but admins seeing that address but if you feel that a potential breech in email security is an issue, its best to use one that will cause no consequences.
Re: Our email addresses
One of the things I implemented was guests can only read the threads, though they can post as a guest and even start I thread, they cannot see our profiles here or look anyway. A bit of precaution..
To actually see a members a members profile, they would have to sign up! So it has a two fold purpose. It will also keep spam bots from gleaning that info as well.

Re: Our email addresses
I felt confident that it would be safe here but boy I'm becoming super paranoid about being online anymore. I do have an alternate email account but always forget, chalk it up to old age. All the technology you guys talk about is way over my head and comprehension. I'm slowly learning about "stuff" thanks to your knowledge. Thank you for always sharing.
Good job everyone.

That is not necessarily a "bad" trait! The web is definitely not the safest place to be, after dark, or even during the daytime.
Personally, I have several email addresses, in an attempt to sort out incoming messages and avoid spam.
1. Business - shared only with clients or other businesses. (Trusted contacts)
2. Family & Friends (but some friends' computers were taken over, and their contact lists used by scammers).
3. Shopping - on sites that I may or may not revisit. (Usually trusted, but may have leaks)
4. Throwaway - for use on sites that might "share" my email with somebody else.
Use of multiple addresses also acts as a "screening process", so one can more readily identify the scams that might be attempted. Most of the email hosts have very good spam detectors, and that too is a very helpful safeguard.
One should also be very careful about HTML emails delivered to one's computer. Plain text email cannot carry a "payload" (unless it is in a clickable link or attachment). HTML emails can carry executable code that could do nasty things. So, if you want to be extra careful about emails, opt for "text only" rather than "HTML".
Perhaps of even more importance is to be careful on what link one clicks when visiting various sites on the web. Wife clicked on what she thought was a link to an informational site, and suddenly found her laptop was taken over by some porn site. She could not stop the displays, ads, and other nonsense! I had to reformat her hard drive, and reinstall Windows!
Finally, be VERY careful if you use any of the "social sites". I don't use 'em. I am not interested in learning if somebody is constipated this morning, or maybe their cat had barfed another furball. Unfortunately, many of those sites had their member lists hacked, resulting in nasty surprises for the members. Do not release any personally-identifying information, unless you are absolutely sure of both the site and the recipient.

I couldn't agree with you more Slim! This isn't the first forum I have admined / moderated on. I use gmail and Yahoo both as forum mail rather then my own home addy. Safer that way. And I detest spammers..
